Il 49enne è stato nominato successore di Luciano Spalletti il 31 maggio. Conte dopo aver ricevuto l’incarico dall’Inter ha dichiarato: "È normale lavorare per club diversi, non vedo l'ora di portare l'Inter ai livelli elevati a cui appartiene la società, i tifosi si aspettano molto e fanno bene a sostenere la squadra. Devo lavorare molto, ho bisogno di lavorare, è nel mio DNA, posso accettare di avere solo poche possibilità di vincere in un primo momento, ma questo deve cambiare, possiamo vincere cose, non abbiamo limiti". Conte aveva anche la possibilità di sostituire Massimiliano Allegri nell'ex club della Juventus, ma è stato attratto nell’iniziare una nuova avventura con l'Inter dopo aver discusso con l'amministratore delegato Giuseppe Marotta e il presidente Steven Zhang. "La presenza di Marotta mi ha aiutato a raggiungere l'Inter perché era la conferma che avevano intenzioni molto serie", ha detto. "Per otto stagioni non hanno combattuto per il primo posto, vogliono cambiare e puntare in alto e sono rimasto colpito dalla determinazione di Zhang.”
